While Waiting for my delayed plane
I am feeling akin to the power airline employee who is listening to the people who were stuck on the tarmack for an hour only to be returned to the terminal.
Other than his insignia on this shirt, he has little to do with their complaint.
I believe, I have parallels in my life.
If you use IM i am alwaysoncarl @ everyone include hotmail for MSN.

Defending My Honor
Wow, what incredible hostility, and blatant defamation of character.
It occurred to me as one of the few people who you could actually contact from Gigaoms site, that I should at least say I am here.
I am not at liberty to discuss anything, but for all who want to complain to me. I will listen.
Of course, if you consider me a jester, than the talk may be among two fools.
But if you want to contact me. I am here.
Kind Regards,
Carl

Responding to GigaOm
Okay, Lets try to turn to the positive here.
Lets talk about what happens. First of all, I agree VoiceCon had the audience this time. When VON first started VoiceCon (PBX2000) did not like VoIP. The innovation was with us. We built a great UC event that probably would have done well if I had not been running against VoiceCon. The sessions by in large were great.
For the innovators I was asked to provide an open staging area in VONCamp and I did that. But marketing an undefined structure without the entire community committed to supporting it was hard. On the other hand, Several good topics came out of the discussion that I hope the community progresses.
I will remind people that I established a ning thing for people to continue the dialogue its called pulcom.ning.com. It is not a place for commercials its a place for discussion.
As for us missing the boat on Video, I am not sure thats accurate. imho, IPTV vs the Over the Top Video seems to being won by OTTV. Jeff had it right with his video on the net content.
I am not saying we are without error.
Halloween is a much bigger event these days then when I was a kid.
And Choosing to compete with Saint Patty, Maundy Thursday, and Spring Break was another error.
The truth is VoIP won. But like Bush on the Air Craft carrier the victory is not concluded.
I intend to stay in the community to support its continued evolution.

The Hand That Fed You
Okay, lets cope with the rumors. For the time being pulvermedia is restructuring.
In theory no one should be noticing these changes, but people like to talk. Some just like to hear themselves.
Its unfortunate.
Look at the industry and show me a company that has not gone through a major transition at least once.
VON had a lot of redeeming qualities.
And their are lots of people who want to see VON fail.
Its probably never a good idea to let the outside world see the sausage being made.
If you are reading the negative about what is going on here are some rules.
1) Consider the source
2) Consider the sources source
3) Consider the fact that the blogosphere has lots of people who want to show they are in the know.
Many of which have proven they aren't.
The people in the discussion are above my pay grade.
They will duke it out for a while and then we will see what happens.
This you can believe.
The story has not concluded.

Dear Bill, I now have a MAC
I am not someone who adopts technology for the cool. After all it took me half a decade to finally get a sidekick. And between IM on the sidekick and my blackberry I can replicate about 70% of my desktop experience while on the road. Often to my wife’s chagrin (since I may occasionally read a message while driving).
So why am I on a MacBook?
The strange but true answer is that the power supply pin on my last 2 machines broke. In coping with this I now have another place where the lack of Interoperability drives me nuts. But I digress.
So here I am with a Leopard, where I am changing my spots. I was told to load Vista on the machine. But I am in no hurry. My first goal is to get use to have a single mouse button.
It’s the little things that make the difference between kewl and cold.
I may sing the praises of the wow factor here, but for today. I am glad the machine is working.

Its not the iPhone, its Apple
Over the weekend I went to the Apple Store in my area, and looked at the iPhone Jeff had accused me of acquiring already. To be clear. I have not purchased one, but its not due to contempt. Its just that for my personal use I have a blackberry from att and I do not see the iPhone as a good alternative to the MS Exchange server integration.
However, if I did not have my blackberry already, I would be hard pressed to argue with the iPhone as a tool of communication. The Interface is fantastic. Having watched a coworkers phone, I want to give Apple kudos for the navigation and functionality. It may be weak in many areas but its generally awesome from the user interface perspective.
And that has been a weakness for our industry. You had to really want to be a user of some of these devices. My old blackberry with the two letter keys, my nokia with its bizarre spell checker --- all of them annoyed me. But the iPhone is a great small computer, and you can incidentally make phone calls.
If you were contemplating a Mac Mini, I would just move to this device.... And by the way this is the major point of this blog. Walk into Apple and about 25% of the store is dedicated to iPhone. Its an awesome marketing roll out and something that the phone industry just does not how to accomplish.
At the att store, the iPhone has a prominent window display but then is just another device. The coworker had problems with his first iPhones hard drive and Apple replaced it in no time. When I heard about the iPhone having problems getting the service established, I thought it made sense for people to go to att. But now I see that Apple has a commitment to this strategy that makes att a coat tail rider.
My sense is that att's marketshare is going to get a much bigger boost here than I expected, and if it keeps the relationship it could build it out into something even more spectacular.
This actually may be a sign of things to come for wifi devices / tablets with wireless broadband and dedicated services. If I were Sprint or Verizon, I would be looking for my device building friend.

Nicole's Graduation
Kristin, O'Reilly and Nicole Laskau graduated today from Ramapo College of New Jersey. It was the first time I had been at Ramapo in about 20 years and I was shocked at the amount of building that was going on.
When I went to the school we had to fight to keep it alive.
What a change.
Speaking of Change, here are some thoughts on GPS. I you cant convince a family to use GPS at a graduation ceremony, I don't you ever can. I dropped my wife and her parents off near the ceremony and then I proceeded to part the car.
When I got to the ceremony, My wife who I can pick out of a crowd pretty easily was part of the ocean of people.
Out comes the cellphone...
[Husband]
Where are you....
[Wife]
I am midway in the crowd
Where are you....
[Husband]
I am up on the grassy noll
Okay I am looking midway
[Wife]
I see you look to your left...
No thats your right
Now Look up... See me
I am waving the program at you...
see me...
good
Minutes later, the phones start up between my wife and Nicole
For this part I am only listening to one half.
[Wife]
Where are you in the line?
See if you can walk on the left side of the procession so I can get your picture.
Where are you now?
And then as the students parade in as they get to seats, the phones come out again.. Here I am only speculating.
[Student]
Mom do you see me I am the fifth seat in the tenth row behind the guy with red hair.
And this does count the conversations afterwards.
http://www.loopt.com would do well.

Struggling for Voice
Without naming names, I have been ghosting alot of materials this week. I seem to have a strange and wonderful gift of processing lots of information and putting it to work.
The sad thing is when I do this I have a singularity of focus.
Blogging strikes me as a job for someone other than me.
I look to interview, not blog. Or I write but its for a specific purpose.
So here is the question. If I have an audience Focus me. What should I write on today?

Radvision Visit
I was invited to Radvision's offices today and sat with Jacob Bridger and Anatoli Levine.
Radvision has been a member of the VON community from the very beginning and like Jeff has followed the wave of Video. In fact like Jeff they now own the CU/SEEme assets that got jeff started.
Zohar Zisapel, the Founder of Radvision (and several other companies) is speaking at Spring VON.
Radvision has three lines of business. The Technical Business Unit is still the home of stacks and developer solutions. The Enterprise Business Unit is supporting Video Conferencing from the Multichannel Unit basis. In this area they have expanded to include HDTV and I saw some to the work the partners have done. The quality was impressive.
But it was the new Mobile Services Business Unit that they wanted me to see the new Demo. Here they had developed 3G video that they can use for point to point and with the MCU. Because we were in the US we had to use WiFi but I have seen the 3G demo'd in lands that had advance phone networks.
After this demo we looked at a camera maanagement and mapping tool that could be used for surveillience.
At the end of the meeting, I felt that if I was a wall street analyst, I would be on the Buy side for RVSN.
Since I am not, I will remind you all that the opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

Raising my Ostrich Head
I really did not want to pay attention to the Verizon vs. Vonage debate. But I kept getting asked about it by friends. As someone who has worked for both companies, I maybe unique.
As someone with friends with in both companies, I am not sure I can find a position that makes sense to me.
However, I am looking to set up a webinar for next thursday about this issue and I will let you know how it goes.
PS I am amazed as to how few people want to speak on the record.

Texas Instruments Developers Conference
I am in Dallas at the TIDC which is a very well run event (damn it :<))
The session I am moderating features Mark Spencer and a discussion about Asterisk in relation to DSPs. Given that Digium makes its money this way it should be interesting.
In the prediscussion we talked about the Video and if it is coming of age?
The general view is that 40 per port vs 2 per port made it hard to find a convergence point.
however we all had video apps we wanted.
Should be a good discussion.

High Deal On the way to VON Mexico
Sometimes fate steps and sees you through.
I flew down to Mexico on Continental next to Camilla Dahlen High Deal's CEO. She is good people, but constantly has issues getting a speaking slot from me.
Don't get me wrong personally I like talking to her and I did for about 2 of the six hours on the plane.
We talked about rating engines, the current state of the market place. The fact that customization of solutions is always required.
Why VON is the conference for High Deal and what others she likes.
We also shared some of issues with others, but I will refrain from naming names. Only speak well is my goal, and with Camilla its easy to maintain that.
The one real question is to how highlight Back End Support Systems.
One answer maybe to point out that there is a movement to bring these systems into the front end devices.
Processing is cheap so why not take advantage of it.
In the discussion, I was trying to see what added the value to placing it in the device itself. Does it make a real (time) application to add value, and if so would that not benefit from the network making it context aware?
I would like to hear from anyone thinking about rating issues.

PC over Hell and Dell
The news today in the papers is about Dell having troubles and it seems to run pretty deep.
I know for myself, I have had troubles finding my favorite PC and no offense to Lenovo, but I have wanted to purchase from a US company.
I seem to blow up PCs on a all to regular basis. The last one crashed while at the office replying to an email. But I have others that gave me warning or with a screw loose gave up the ghost with a little puff of smoke.
The last one was a Toshiba and since i was desparate I went to the Best Buy Geek Squad.
So here is the point. Dell was not a choice for immediate replacement because we don't have an IT department that stocks.
So Gateway, Sony and Toshiba were my choices.
The geeksquad managed to determine that my hardrive could be used as a secondary drive. Which got me back in operation.
Dell does not have a way for me to have this experience. The retail kiosks sell like they are supporting a new market. Not one that is in full operation.
I think that is Dell's biggest problem. We are saturated and they are selling like its not.

All Hail King Ludd as seen on HDTV
The wife got her way and I am now the [proud] owner of an HDTV.
I can't see all the screen due to the posts on the bed. It has a plug system that I can not seem to understand that is reducing the chances of getting the CD / DVD into it.
I am not ready to join the visual digital age.

From Islands to Continents
I met with NeuStar today.
The discussion focused on peering and what the current state of the marketplace. In the discussion it became clear that we had "crossed the chasm" of Voice over IP and that interconnection was no longer about wholesale minute pricing but direct termination between carriers.
SIP - IX is designed for this new area of interconnection. The components of it include the ability to signal routing, validate identity and traverse adverse network elements. With partners such as Acme Packet, Broadsoft, iBasis, Nextone, Sonus, Sylantro, and XO Communications this is much more robust strategy than first meets the eye.
Its a service that makes alot of sense for cable operators and others looking to benefit from IMS.

The Delta of JetBlue
In a previous life of blogging, I was one of the first to sing JetBlue's praises.
Jet Blue has always had Delta in its sights if your read Blues Streak or any of the articles about them in the early years.
Today I want to tell you that Delta is being emulated by JetBlue.
I have ended up with damaged bags, delayed flights, but more often than not the way I feel they are resembling Delta is in the Nickle and Diming of me for every change. I had a flight credit due to my not going to CES. Its been swallowed up in their working with me on changes in my flight iternaries.
Worse yet, my Free Flight which I was going to use to bring my wife with the me to Vegas, is now an albatross on my neck. Change fees flight changes that I have to put in place due to placeholding it.
When free stuff costs its makes you feel really abused.
All of that is just flight related. Now the real issue.
JFK Terminal Six.
They are in process of constructing a new terminal at the old TWA site. But they have destroyed the parking lot, closed elevators for repairs that take you to the airtrain, had some problems with user identification on the self - checkin terminals and made the experience with personnel less friendly.
I am frequently waking up in the morning at 4 AM to take the 6 AM flight and get into the office at 9 AM. I rent a car sometimes and then I take the last flight out at 10 PM because that is the only flight I am guaranteed to get if I work a full day in our Beverly office. If I try to take an earlier flight and miss it JetBlue charges me and often the fair difference is in their favor by a considerable amount. Nickle and Dimed, I then all to often end up at the temporary terminal at JFK with no exit for folks like me who have baggage, so I am on a shuttle to get out of the maze at JFK. With 6 no longer a parking lot I take the airtrain to my car. Last night I waited 45 minutes in line to pay the parking fee (WITH EASY PASS!).
When I got home from JFK at 11:45 PM last night, I made up my mind that the train and my car would be methods of communiting to Boston for next few months.
JetBlue, has gone from the cute baby to either a terrible two or a rebellious teen treating its passengers like its parent.
I will try them again in March, if I can find a way to use my free ticket.
Maybe they will have matured with age.

Two on the Move and Two in the Groove!
Bob Carnegie moves (back?) to Verso Technologies
The first was with Bob Carnegie who left Pactolus to take on the challenges associated with Verso Technologies . It is a return to the Clarent gear, but per Bob lots of new solutions are there. We will follow up to learn more.
Earl Turner moves on from Time Warner Telecom... to enjoy the good life, however he is not opposed to talking to people who could use his help. Many of the readers will recall that Earl was quoted as saying that Softswitches were not ready for prime time. As one of the most dedicated people to making softswitches work, I can see how the press got his goat. Still if you want to bust his chops email or perhaps IM him at
Earl Turner on Yahoo!
Other conversations included a good talk with Joe Crimi at Telcordia . He has been working on a number of Mobile Virtual Network Operators [MVNO] including the ones prominently feature by Sprint such as Disney. Looks like the relationship with Sprint paid off in the long run.
Last but certainly not least Link Hoewig from Verizon showed me his blog . I thought the conversation was going to be about Net Neutrality but instead we talked about two way communication on the Internet and particularly Verizon's FIOS and EVDO strategy.
The gist of the conversation is that Verizon is moving to an Internet where you (the end user) gets as good as it sends on the Internet.

New Years Resolutions
The only new years resolution I made is that I keep writing in my blog.
So Alec Saunders and the IOTUM team developed a new application for the blackberry and they want me to try it out. I really want to try it because I think the team is doing a nice job of creating contextual communication.
But I am leery. Years ago I ended up on the wrong side of a discussion with Jonathan Rosenberg about the possibliities of feature interaction problems in SIP correctly. So while everyone may be able to keep SIP working write, I am not sure my Blackberry can handle all these apps safely. Right now my Nokia with the Truphone app works like a charm as a phone. But I need to reload the email because of some internal IT issues. And I am my own support system here, since I am not using standard systems. "Deviant Caveat Emptor"
The trade off is the relevance engine. In the theory of Voice 2.0 (or purple minutes as Jeff would have said) the value is immediate context of the communication. However, my issue is that I do not feel I have the luxury of reading only the things that I want. Similar to the clean plate club that has made me the hefty person I am today. It's all or it's incomplete.
In the last few years, I have gone through four machines and my mailbox needs serious purging. Because of this now I have a garbage can for a hard disk files all over that read , "SVON85.ppt" representing a presentation that was almost complete. Of course nowhere on my machine can I find "SVONfinal.ppt"
I suspect that like Xenon I can never reach the finish line.
Getting a single view of my files, emails and names has become the obsession of mine. And it includes my Exchange Server and Blackberry address book which has lots of dupes and some deceased friends, who probably are not anxious to hear from me.
So with the understanding that I am probably an accident waiting to happen I am willing to try the new application. It's a new year, on with the apps.

Phil H
Dear Phil
I am pretty safe here on my blog. Let me just share with you, that I write for an audience that I believe is with me. I have done a tremendous good for our community and you are right that I am not a marketeer.
The o is for applications and if you can not understand why that is I feel sorry for you. We build applications over IP. I was pretty amazed how far you went with this view point.
G-d bless you for your insight, but I believe you were most insulted that I only gave you a $200 discount.
Don't worry it won't happen again.
Kind Regards,

Spring Clean Up Week.
I am currently working in my office at home from the Interior wall to the. I have swapped out my computers (for a number of reasons), have bought and installed a new printer, fax, scanner all in one specifically for getting more organized.
The printer came in this huge box that has eaten up my office. I moved all the stuff I have to go through to my couch which is now a small mountain range with lots of faults lines and a delicate balance.
I have found three different versions of my business card, and I am proud to say that at least the email did not change. My wife is away this week and it is a battle to have all this done before she returns.

VoIP to the Rescue
To Our Inveneo Supporters:
On September 7th, Inveneo (www.inveneo.org) received a call for help to provide communications for the relief teams and local residents of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. With our experience in the developing world, we felt compelled to volunteer our skills to help rebuild communications in this hurricane-devastated area. Inveneo is now turning to you to make a special request for donations to support this important effort. Our goal is to raise $7,000 to support our team that is helping on the ground now.
The call for help came from CityTeam (www.cityteam.org), a national non-profit organization focused on homeless outreach and disaster relief. CityTeam requested access to the Internet for evacuees, now homeless residents and their own team.
By Monday September 12th, the Inveneo team arrived in Bay St. Louis and found complete destruction. For over 90 miles before they reached the coast, trees and rooftops littered the area. Abandoned cars and boats were tossed around. They set up camp behind a church destroyed by 18 foot high floodwaters, like many houses in the area which were completely washed away. There still is no electricity, only intermittent communication by cell phone, a strong positive military presence and a curfew after dark.
The Inveneo led team completed a site assessment, gained approval for their plan from the regional Emergency Operations Center and immediately began to put a system in place to establish telephone service and Internet access through the use of wireless, open source software and computer technologies.
By the end of this week, a communication center with Internet access and telephone service via Voice over IP will be available to help CityTeam and allow local residents to start to rebuild their lives by making phone calls to loved ones and accessing important Internet web sites including FEMA, American Red Cross, insurance providers and banks.
Inveneo is also cooperating with other volunteer groups to deploy a total of 1000 donated phones and 1000 donated PCs in the area over the next three weeks.
Many other individuals and organizations are supporting this effort by donating equipment and peoples' time including: Center for Neighborhood Technologies (www.cnt.org) Cisco (www.cisco.com) Digium (www.digium) - Mark Spencer and his team Intel (www.intel.com) ManyOneNetworks (www.manyone.net) Penguin (www.penguincomputing.com) Verso (www.verso.com) WISPA (www.wispa.org) - Mac Dearman and his team Wyse Technology (www.wyse.com)
We'd like to ask you to help Inveneo with a donation to offset our costs for travel, food, water, gas, transport, tools and supplies! So far we've received $600 and 100,000 air miles from generous supporters. Your help at any level can make a huge difference.
Donations can be made via PayPal through Inveneo's web site at (www.inveneo.org) or checks can be sent to Inveneo at 760 Market Street, Suite 866, San Francisco, CA 94112.
Thank you for your support.

Next Generation Networks.
I have experienced the retirement of some friends, who show now interest in doing anything but relax and not think about work. G-d bless them.
But the people at their previous employers who are now talking to me are younger and its clear to me that they are the next generation.
And they are not as considerate of me to start because I have not proven myself to them. So I have to build a next generation network with them.

Whack Pack
After a morning of discussing my creativity I decided that it was time to repurchase my deck of cards from Roger Von Oech.
I have used his whack pack in all sorts of circumstances and it was with the knowledge that I was going to be in meetings all this week at
VON that I thought it wise to have a deck handy.
I would love to hear from other Roger Von Oech fans

Day Off - line
Traveling back from Hawaii left me out of contact with the world.
A few phone calls found me, but most of the day I was MIA.

A quick call - Where can I learn about SIP?
A friend asks where he can learn about SIP. After I answer "VON", the next thing I suggest is Henry's and Alan's book.

Travel Day
Diana and Marni left Friday for the SIP Summit. This is the show I have been looking forward to since Fall VON. The IETFs in abundance giving us their insight. The BOF where the IETFers endorse the concept of a session controller.
This is going to be a very interesting event. So today I spent the day travelling to
Tomorrow the conference begins.

ETSI TISPAN
Richard Brennan and Kevin Flynn joined me on a conference call about VON Europe and VON Australia. Jeff joined ETSI back in 1997. The benefit to pulver.com was to gain access to the standards people as speakers. The benefit to ETSI was to tap into this incredible stream of new companies that were participating in the VoIP Revolution.
The purpose of the call was to discuss how we could add content to VON Australia and VON Europe that helped promote ETSI's work. And the work is very good, particularly if you are a carrier that is trying to determine how to integrate from their existing network.
Here in a nut shell are the salient points. ETSI TISPAN is doing good work with blending of VoIP and 3G standards that we should make people aware of. Of particular interest is their Testing services, which is a much more vendor friendly version of the dreaded Telecordia / ILEC OSMINE process. So ETSI would like to help with the sessions and getting us representatives from the area.
The Follow up is a meeting while we are doing the Executive Summit

Swapping Content for Content
I was hoping to get the precons for Spring VON stable with Kristin and Peggy. Europe looks in worse shape then I remembered. So I have to focus.
Having said that, Jeff is in the office and his keynote at the PTC is on Jeff's mind, So Johnny and I are here working on the news slides.
We will ignore the fact that I have not put my slides together.
Hopefully sometime today I can go back to working Spring's VON precon.
